The spree of gun violence in Chicago continued during June’s first weekend when 31 people were shot. One of those, one died.
A drive-by shooting on Chicago’s South Side early Sunday morning left 35-year-old Ari Armour dead and three others injured, the Chicago Sun-Times reported. Armour, a former Chicago Public Schools employee, was standing outside a birthday party in Englewood when gunmen opened fire.
Officials said the passengers of an SUV opened fire on Armour, striking him in the head and back. The Cook County medical examiner pronounced him dead at the scene. The victim worked as a security guard and assistant football coach at Hubbard High School, family members told ABC 7 in Chicago. The author of a children’s book left two of his own behind.
This shooting also left three people wounded. Police said the 25-year-old woman and two men (19 and 32) were sent to a hospital for treatment.
The violence continued Sunday afternoon when a kids ride at a local carnival became a crime scene, the local newspaper reported. A group of men reportedly began arguing about 5 p.m. Sunday afternoon in the middle of the three-block-long carnival. One of the men pulled a gun and began shooting. One of the bullets struck a 26-year-old man in the leg. An ambulance transported him to Mount Sinai Hospital for treatment.
Fortunately, an 8-year-old girl standing nearby escaped injury. Her father saw the argument escalating and began walking toward the carnival’s exit before the shooting began. “You just try to have something fun for the kids, and this happens,” the father said.
Officials reported that 25 other people were shot during the first weekend of June. The article covers from 5 p.m. on June 1 through 5 a.m. on June 4.
