The quick action by a North Carolina police officer saved the life of a man trapped beneath a car following a crash.
East Spencer, North Carolina, police officer Willie Spencer responded to a report of a car crash and found a man trapped beneath his vehicle. The officer quickly took action to extricate the man who was screaming in pain, FOX46 reported.
“This guy he was in pain so natural instincts kicked in and I knew I had to get him out of the vehicle,” Officer Spencer told the reporter.
Spencer observed 51-year-old William Wright trapped beneath his Cadillac Escalade that had been struck by another vehicle. Wright was underneath the Escalade working on the vehicle when the crash occurred and the SUV fell on him.
“He stepped out his vehicle, went underneath his vehicle to see what was going on. While he was underneath, another vehicle came up behind him, struck the back of his vehicle causing that vehicle to drop on him,” the officer explained.
Realizing what he needed to do, Spencer rushed to the back of Wright’s vehicle and pulled out the jack. As he lifted the vehicle off the victim, another Good Samaritan dragged Wright from beneath the nearly 6,000 pound Cadillac.
An ambulance transported Wright to a Wake Forrest hospital. Doctors determined he had no major injuries and can expect a full recovery.
“You know it feels good you know to help out another human being. I mean that’s what we do,” Spencer proudly said. “We put this uniform on every day, not knowing if we’re going to make it home to our loved ones but it’s the price we’re willing to pay.”
Spencer’s boss, Police Chief Sharon Hovis said, “There’s nothing more endearing than a good day like today where someone was helped and someone was saved and one of our officers was able to be a part of that.”
The driver of the vehicle that struck Wright’s SUV received a ticket.
