A Texas teenager has been accused of murder for allegedly shooting and killing her boyfriend during an armed robbery on New Year’s Eve.
Prosecutors say Yvonne Raquel Ramirez, 19, shot and killed Joshua McKinney, 19, in a plot to steal his guns and demand that he pay her $2,000 in ransom money to get them back.
McKinney, who had his sights set on the Marines, shored up some money and met Ramirez in Baytown around 4:30 a.m. Sunday.
When they met, McKinney choked his girlfriend and aimed a gun at her head, according to a witness at the scene.
The witness, who left the scene to find help, said he returned to the scene to find McKinney dead and Ramirez with a gunshot wound to her shoulder.
Gloria Chaplin, who resides in a home near the site where McKinney was killed, said he came running to her door not long before his death.
“Josh come beating on the door saying someone was after him,” Chaplin told Fox 26. “And then he ran back out, and just a sec—it all happened between 4 and by 4:30 the police were here. It all happened so quick.”
Chaplin said McKinney would play video games with her grandson.
Ramirez told police at the hospital that she took her boyfriend’s gun in self-defense after he dropped it, but police say her story did not add up because they found proof she took his wallet after killing him.
Ramirez is being held on $50,000 bond in the Harris County Jail’s medical unit while she recovers from her gunshot wound. Police are looking for anyone who may have served as one of Ramirez’s accomplices in connection to McKinney’s death.
