MATAMOROS, Tamaulipas — A Mexican Marine and seven gunmen allegedly part of Mexico’s Gulf Cartel died this week in a fierce gun battle near the Texas border.
The shootout took place in the rural community of El Moquetito, about 30 minutes away from Matamoros. The area and nearby highways have a long history of being under the control of organized crime.
The shootout took place on the 267-kilometer marker of the highway that connects Ciudad Victoria with Matamoros. It was in that spot that the convoy of Mexican Marines fought off Gulf Cartel gunmen. The highway was temporarily closed by military forces for members of Mexico’s Attorney General’s Office to document the scene. Federal authorities have not released the number of weapons and vehicles seized.
As Breitbart Texas has reported, Matamoros and its surrounding areas are controlled by Mexico’s Gulf Cartel. The organization controls the trafficking of drugs and humans smuggled into South Texas. The Gulf Cartel is fighting internal war for control of Reynosa. The internal struggle has led to a dramatic spike in violence and shootouts throughout northern Tamaulipas.
Editor’s Note: Breitbart Texas traveled to the Mexican States of Tamaulipas, Coahuila, and Nuevo León to recruit citizen journalists willing to risk their lives and expose the cartels silencing their communities. The writers would face certain death at the hands of the various cartels that operate in those areas including the Gulf Cartel and Los Zetas if a pseudonym were not used. Breitbart Texas’ Cartel Chronicles are published in both English and in their original Spanish. This article was written by “J.A. Espinoza” from Tamaulipas.
