CIUDAD VICTORIA, Tamaulipas – The State of Tamaulipas requested the federal government of Mexico help with transferring a former state governor from state to federal prison.
The request comes after the October 6 arrest of former Tamaulipas Governor Eugenio Hernandez Flores on embezzlement and money laundering charges. Since his arrest, Hernandez has been jailed at the state prison in this city. The prison is not considered to be a maximum security facility and has a history of violence at the hands of drug cartels.
In the U.S., Hernandez Flores is considered a fugitive by the Department of Justice, the Drug Enforcement Administration, and Homeland Security Investigations. Hernandez is facing multiple money laundering charges in the U.S. where, in other cases, he has been mentioned by authorities as having taken cartel bribes.
In connection with the Tamaulipas charges, Hernandes Flores served as the state’s governor from 2005-to 2010. He is facing charges after an investigation by a new anti-corruption unit revealed that his straw-man, Alberto Berlanga Bolado, purchased a 1,600 hectares (100 acres x 100 acres) tract of land in the municipality of Altamira. Berlanga Bolado is currently facing trial in Texas on money laundering and organized criminal activity charges.
Breitbart Texas consulted with a Tamaulipas government official who requested anonymity in order to confirm that the request for the prison transfer comes after real concerns for the safety of the former politician. The unnamed public official revealed that currently, the state prison in Ciudad Victoria is going through a severe security crisis following various high profile riots and breakout by inmates belonging to the Gulf Cartel/Vieja Escuela Z, and their rivals Cartel Del Noreste (CDN).
