Unknown gunmen stole a tractor-trailer used to transport food items and emergency supplies to survivors of Mexico’s deadly earthquake. In a separate case, thieves stole a thermal imaging camera used to locate trapped victims.
On Wednesday, a trucker identified only as “Alfredo” was driving a tractor-trailer full of food stuffs and emergency supplies along the Mexico City-Puebla highway to make another delivery, Mexico’s Reforma reported. Gunmen riding in a Chevrolet Suburban pulled alongside and forced him to stop en route. The attackers tied up Alfredo and left him on the side of the road.
The trucker, like thousands of others, was trying to help the ongoing search and rescue efforts taking place in Mexico City and other states in the central part of the country that were devastated by a 7.1 quake. The event collapsed multiple buildings and spread chaos through the metropolitan areas, Breitbart Texas reported.
The most recent body count points to a regional total of 302 fatalities, however, rescue workers continue to search through the rubble to locate more survivors.
Those rescue efforts took another blow when the theft of a thermal camera that was being used to search for survivors became known, La Voz reported. The crime took place in the Roma neighborhood of Mexico City where an unknown individual made off with the high-end piece of electronic equipment. As a result of the theft, rescue efforts around that site were further delayed.
