Jeers and insults filled the air as hundreds of earthquake survivors voiced their discontent at one of Mexico’s top officials trying to make a public appearance while rescue efforts were underway.

Surrounded by a security escort and followed by a gaggle of reporters, Miguel Angel Osorio Chong, Mexico’s Secretary of the Interior visited the site of a factory that collapsed in Mexico City.

A video posted by Mexico’s Revolucion 3.0 revealed the anger displayed by rescuers at the apparent effort to politicize the tragedy or gain popularity by making public appearances was met with jeers, insults, and a smack to the head of the politician.

On Tuesday shortly after 1 p.m., a 7.1 earthquake hit the central part of Mexico, causing widespread destruction. The dozens of collapsed buildings have led to more than 225 fatalities, Breitbart Texas reported.

In response to the quake, average citizens joined forces during a series of searches to rescue any survivors. In a loosely coordinated effort, thousands of volunteers handed rocks and debris from one person to another, creating a human chain to rescue victims trapped. Some of the survivors were pulled from schools, homes, apartment complexes, and other collapsed structures.
