Virginia MS-13 Gang Execution: Hit Ordered from El Salvador, Says Prosecutor

Members of the hyper-violent MS-13 gang allegedly beat and stabbed a man to death after leaders in El Salvador gave the “green light” for the hit. Prosecutors say gang members lured the man to his execution after he reportedly passed himself off as a gang leader.

Federal prosecutors charged Jose Martir Larios Espenal, 20, or “Cannabis”; Samuel Enrique Villalobos Sanchez, 18, or “Rasta”; Edgar Oswaldo Blanco Torres, 24, nicknamed “Wizard”; and Dimas Misael Canales Santos, 27, or “Arcangel,” with murder in support of racketeering, the Washington Post reported. The men are charged for their alleged roles in the murder of Christian Alexander Sosa Rivas, 21, and face the death penalty if convicted. Keyri Sujey Portillo Gonzalez, 18, known as “Katty Colon,” also faces the death penalty after she allegedly lured the victim to the Potomac River to smoke marijuana. She reportedly brought along Pin-Sol for the gang members to use to clean their machetes.

Prosecutors say MS-13 leaders in El Salvador “green lit” the murder of Sosa Rivas because he represented himself to be a local gang leader. The killing of the man provided the gang members a pathway to promotion within the ranks of the street gang, the Washington Post reported.

One of the accused, Blanco Torres, told prosecutors they killed Sosa Rivas because he killed someone else and because he stole from the gang and was reportedly hanging out with the rival 18th Street Gang, prosecutors stated.

Sosa Rivas’ girlfriend, Venus Romero Iraheta, 17, also faces charges in state court. She is being tried as an adult and is reported to be an MS-13 gang member. She is charged with killing Damaris A. Reyes Rivas in retaliation for her boyfriend’s murder.

Detectives testified in the State’s trial that Iraheta lured Damaris to a park to interrogate her about Sosa Rivas’ murder, the newspaper reported. Iraheta forced Damaris to remove her shirt on the cold January day so she could feel the pain felt by Sosa Rivas. She then told Damaris she would “see her in hell” and stabbed the 15-year-old girl 13 times with a knife. Video evidence obtained from one of the suspect’s cell phones also showed another MS-13 gang member gouging Damaris’ neck with a tree branch.

Court hearings for four of the five accused gang members are scheduled for Thursday.
