PIEDRAS NEGRAS, Coahuila — State police officers captured a team of drug smugglers that were getting ready to move a load into Texas. The seizure comes at a time when authorities have stepped up operations to prevent cartel violence.
The seizure occured on the banks of the Rio Grande near the rural community of El Moral when state police officers were patrolling dirt roads near the river, information provided to Breitbart Texas by Coahuila law enforcement revealed. Authorities came across two suspicious vehicles and detained the individuals as they prepared to cross with multiple backpacks filled with drugs.
Police seized three backpacks filled with 69 bricks of marijuana from a team of three smugglers who rode a Dodge Durango to get to the river. The individuals from that group were identified only as 24-year-old Alberto, 26-year-old Mitzi, and 21-year-old Jonathan. The second group was riding in a Chevrolet Malibu and had with them two backpacks containing 70 marijuana bricks. The men in the second vehicle were 26-year-old Julio and 31-year-old Felipe. The total weight of the drug load seized was roughly 300 pounds.
The drug seizure comes at a time when Coahuila state authorities have stepped operations to prevent an escalation of violence as rival cartels appear to be making a push for control of lucrative trafficking areas. The escalation began when members of Cartel Jalisco Nueva Generacion hung a banner in Saltillo, the state capital of Coahuila. The banner accused state officials of allowing cartels to operate in the state and announced that they would be taking over, Breitbart Texas reported.
At the same time the banner was hung in Saltillo, cartel assassins presumably with the Cartel Del Noreste faction of Los Zetas killed a human smuggler from a rival organization. For the murder, cartel hitmen appeared to have stolen an SUV in Texas that they then crossed into Mexico; the murder followed an apparent message of a “cleanup”.
