A Mexican national illegally in the U.S. was sentenced to 18 months in federal prison for assaulting a deportation officer.
This week, 23-year-old Hugo Baltazar Ramirez went before a U.S. federal judge in Austin who sentenced him to a prison term of 18 months. Earlier this year, Baltazar pleaded guilty to the charge of assaulting a federal officer, which carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison. Baltazar faces deportation thereafter.
As Breitbart Texas reported, federal authorities arrested Baltazar on February 10 after he assaulted an Enforcement Removal Officer (ERO) with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) who was trying to arrest him for being in the country illegally.
During the arrest, Baltazar tried to run away but the officer caught up with him after a short foot chase. Baltazar began to fight with the officer to avoid arrest. The officer was able to get one handcuff on the suspect but was not able to secure the second. During the assault, Baltazar was able to get on top of the officer and began striking him. The man grabbed the officer’s head and began to smash it against the ground several times. A second officer arrived and helped subdue Baltazar.
