REYNOSA, Tamaulipas — State police officers and numerous officials gathered in Ciudad Victoria to provide full police honors to a fallen comrade.
Earlier this week, Tamaulipas State Police Officer Martin Pesina Nuñez was killed while fighting off a cartel ambush in the municipality of San Fernando near Rio Bravo. The gun battle was an apparent ambush where a convoy of cartel gunmen attacked the state police officers who were conducting routine patrols.
While fighting off the attack, authorities killed three gunmen and forced the rest to flee. Some of the cartel gunmen made their way into the populated areas where they stole vehicles from local residents in an effort to escape. Authorities requested backup and air support from the Mexican military to search for the fleeing gunmen. During that gun battle, Officer Pesina was injured and rushed to a local hospital where he died from his injuries.
In recent weeks, the Tamaulipas government stepped up their efforts to target the activities of Mexico’s Gulf Cartel, the criminal organization largely responsible for pushing record-setting numbers of Central American families through the Rio Grande Valley.
During the ceremony this week in Ciudad Victoria, fellow officers did a roll call and held a moment of silence after Pesina’s name was called and listed as fallen in the line of duty.
