An illegal immigrant living in Idaho was sentenced to 20 years in prison after stabbing his pregnant wife and leaving her on the side of a road to die.
Jose E. Cardenas, 24, of Mexico, was arrested back in August 2016 after being accused of luring his four-months pregnant wife from her workplace and eventually stabbing her, according to a previous Breitbart News report.
Cardenas got into a car with his wife at the time and then took her car keys, just before stabbing her repeatedly in the neck and chest, according to KTVB News.
“Mr. Cardenas showed no regard for the law or human life when he attacked the victim and left her for dead on the side of the road,” Prosecutor Bryan Taylor said in a statement. “Thankfully, she was able to call for help or this very well could have been a homicide.”
Cardenas then left the scene of the stabbing, leaving his pregnant wife to die, but authorities said she was able to get help soon after the incident occurred.
The Mexican national was arrested later in the day when authorities showed up to a house where they believed Cardenas was staying.
Cardenas admitted to the stabbing, saying he took the knife he used from his uncle’s house just after he and the victim had gotten into an argument. After stabbing his wife, Cardenas said he threw the knife into a canal.
In addition to his prison sentence, Cardenas must also pay $5,000 in civil penalties, as well as $500 in fines. Cardenas is ordered not to have any contact with the victim or her family for 20 years.
When Cardenas is released from prison after his sentence, he will be deported back to Mexico.
