MONTERREY, Nuevo Leon — As a result of President-Elect Donald Trump’s deal with Carrier to keep 1,000 jobs in Indiana, a Mexican border governor is calling on his residents to boycott Texas in retaliation.
During a public event on Thursday, Nuevo León’s governor Jaime “El Bronco” Rodriguez called on the residents of his state to avoid shopping in Texas cities and traveling to Lone Star beaches to send a message to Trump. Nuevo León is one of Mexico’s leading manufacturing and industrial regions.
“With us not going to McAllen for 15 days, Trump will change his mind,” Rodriguez said. “Stop going to South Padre Island and we will go instead to China (rural city in Nuevo León), the Cuchillo Dam, and the Isla Con Madre (play on words to counter South Padre Island).”
Rodriguez, who is rumored to be planning a run for Mexico’s presidency in 2018 said he is looking into improving relations with Asian countries and he is halting any business development with U.S. companies. The harsh stance from the Nuevo León government comes as a response Trump’s deal with Carrier that kept the company from moving some of its operations from Indiana into Santa Catarina, Nuevo León. Carrier was initially set to fire 1,000 Hoosiers to move its factory to Nuevo León.
