A Houston area high school math teacher stands accused of having sex with one of his female students in his car at a park. During a police investigation, he admitted they engaged in sexual intercourse “probably twice.”
Harris County authorities charged Alfredo Campos, 30, with two felony counts of sexual assault of a child under 17 following an investigation opened by Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District campus police. Law enforcement took him into custody on Friday and posted a $30,000 bail.
The teacher-student sexual misconduct was exposed by an anonymous parent who contacted a Cypress Ridge High assistant principal on November 2. The parent said their child, also a student at the school, heard rumors that Campos was having a sexual relationship with a female student, the Houston Chronicle reported.
When initially questioned by authorities, the underage teen said she and Campos chatted over social media and text messaging since the fall of 2015. Court documents showed the girl said Campos sent her a photo of himself wearing boxer shorts and asked if she would spend the weekend with him, KHOU reported. She also said they only kissed and that Campos touched her breasts and buttocks.
When detectives spoke to Campos, he said he tutored the girl several times a week during last school year–alleging she confided in him because she was having trouble at home. He said he tried to give her moral support, according to the Houston newspaper. However, he denied having any sexual activity with the girl until officers showed him screenshots of online communications she shared with authorities.
Apparently, the teen made screenshots of their intimate messages when her phone began to fail. She then sent them to a friend for safekeeping, KPRC reported. Once investigators showed Campos the images, he admitted they had sex “probably twice” in his car at an area park. He described it as “consensual,” according to court documents.
In later police questioning, the teenager said they had sexual intercourse four to five times at the same park, according to the Houston Chronicle, which added the girl said she performed oral sex on Campos and was afraid to stop because she feared he would fail her in math class. She also asserted he said he was suicidal.
Following his arrest, Cy-Fair ISD released a statement. They noted Campos was removed from the high school campus once the allegations surfaced. It read:
“CFISD administrators were very concerned to learn about an alleged inappropriate relationship between a staff member and student at Cypress Ridge High School. Due to the serious nature of the allegation, the staff member was immediately removed from the campus. Law enforcement conducted a full investigation, leading to the arrest of the suspect. Violations of student trust will not be tolerated. We fully support the swift prosecution of anyone caught compromising student safety.”
Prior to this latest incident, Breitbart Texas reported that teacher-student sexual misconduct ranked seventh on Lt. Governor Dan Patrick’s top 10 priorities for the 85th legislative session, which begins on January 10, 2017. On Monday, Representative Tony Dale (R-Cedar Park) filed House Bill 218, proposed legislation to combat this rampant problem. In September, the Texas Education Agency (TEA) confirmed the number of these incidences soared to 222 cases, an 80 percent increase compared to the 2008-09 school year when the agency opened 123 improper educator-student relationship investigations. The bill hopes to close loopholes, stiffen penalties, and offer measures that ensure education professionals and school employees interact appropriately with the minors they are expected to protect from harm.
