HOUSTON, Texas – A 19-year-old man from El Salvador has been arrested in Houston and stands charged with aggravated sexual assault of a minor under the age of 14. The girl had been the subject of an Amber Alert on Monday.
Kevin Enrique Mejia, 19, is in the Harris County jail and has been charged with the sexual assault of a 13-year-old girl who went missing from her bus stop on Monday. The girl was found safely later that day.
Investigators with the Harris County Sheriff’s Office reported that Mejia picked up the teenager at her bus stop and drove her to his residence. An Amber Alert was issued following her disappearance on Monday.
Court records at the Harris County District Clerk’s Office confirm that Mejia is a citizen of El Salvador. Officials with the Harris County Sheriff’s Office confirmed to Breitbart Texas that no immigration hold has yet to be placed on the Salvadoran national.
Mejia allegedly met the young girl via a smartphone app a few months ago, information obtained by Breitbart Texas from the sheriff’s office revealed. He purportedly exchanged messages with the girl via the app.
Sheriff’s office investigators worked with FBI agents to determine Mejia’s location. They converged on his home and arrested him without incident. The young girl was taken to a local area hospital for a medical examination, officials said in a written statement.
Court records obtained by Breitbart Texas show that Mejia has no prior criminal history in Harris County. Officials with the sheriff’s office also confirmed he has no known gang affiliation.
Mejia is being held in the Harris County jail on a $35,000 bond according to the Harris County District Clerk’s website.
