A football player from Texas A&M University was arrested on Friday on charges of domestic violence causing injury and interfering with an emergency request for assistance. The Aggie middle linebacker allegedly assaulted his longtime girlfriend in her apartment.
Officials at Texas A&M reacted swiftly to the allegations and immediately suspended Walker from the football team per the department’s policy, the Houston Chronicle’s Brent Zwerneman reported. After allegedly pushing his girlfriend to the ground where she fell on their child’s rocking horse causing injury to her hip, Walker gave his phone to her to call 911 but then took it away from her, police records revealed.
Emergency dispatchers could still here what was going on while the phone was in Walker’s pocket. Dispatchers from the College Station Police Department advised responding officers “they could hear a woman crying on the line and the woman was telling someone to ‘get off her.’” The dispatchers said they could hear “sounds of hitting,” and “sounds of a struggle.”
The CSPD probable cause document states that an argument began and Walker allegedly began throwing things in the apartment. The victim said Walker pushed her to the ground with both of his hands and she fell on their child’s rocking horse. The fall caused her left hip to bruise and swell, Zwerneman reported.
Walker and his girlfriend are the parents of the child who was present in the room at the time, but was not involved in the assault. Walker reportedly confessed to the responding officers that he had pushed her. He said she fell because her feet were crossed. He said he was living with the woman and the child was theirs.
The woman claimed Walker held his phone out to her and “sarcastically” told her to call the police. He eventually gave her the phone, but when she tried to call 911, Walker “snatched the phone from her.” Not realizing the phone connection had already gone through, Walker put the phone in his pocket allowing dispatchers to hear sounds from the apartment.
Walker is currently in his third year as a football player for Texas A&M. He only started four games during his freshman year. During the 2015 season he started only once. Over two seasons he amassed a total of 45 tackles in 21 games in which he played. His season high was eight tackles during his freshman year game against Auburn and five tackles against Arizona State his sophomore year, according to A&M’s 12th Man website. He is said to be “in the mix for playing time” for this season, Zwereman reported.
Walker graduated from Gilmer High School in northeast Texas in 2014. The 20-year-old football player is studying Global Arts, Planning, Design, and Construction in A&M’s College of Architecture.
Joshua Coytez Walker remains in the Brazos County Detention Center on the two Class A misdemeanor charges according to sheriff’s office records obtained by Breitbart Texas. His bond is set at $9,000. He does not appear to have a previous criminal history.
