Mexican authorities have revealed that the son of Mexican drug lord Joaquin El Chapo” Guzman may be among the group of men kidnapped from an upscale restaurant in the resort town of Puerto Vallarta.
The new information was revealed Tuesday morning by Jalisco’s Attorney General Eduardo Almaguer, Mexico’s Proceso Magazine revealed. The new information claims that the victims of the kidnapping including Ivan Guzman Loera were all likely tied to the Sinaloa Cartel.
As Breitbart Texas previously reported, on Monday early morning a group of gunmen pulled up to an upscale restaurant called La Leche for a kidnapping operation. Initially authorities reported that 16 individuals had been taken. That figure was then reduced to between 10 and 12 and on Monday night, Mexican authorities claimed that only six men were kidnapped.
The kidnapping was carried out by only six gunmen that pulled up to the restaurant taking the six victims. In the parking lot of the restaurant the gunmen left behind five luxury vehicles that the victims arrived in. The gunmen also left a group of women that had been at the restaurant with the victims.
Mexican authorities believe the kidnapping is likely tied to an organized crime dispute, however investigators have not publicly disclosed the names of the cartels involved. As Breitbart Texas previously reported, Jalisco is under the control of the Cartel Jalisco Nueva Generacion (CJNG), an offshoot of the Sinaloa Cartel that has an off and on rivalry with their former masters. It remains unclear if the CJNG or if the Sinaloa Cartel’s long time rival the Beltran Leyva Cartel were behind the kidnapping.
Ivan Guzman is one of the sons of jailed drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, the head of the Sinaloa Cartel. Under El Chapo’s leadership, the Sinaloa Cartel became the world’s largest distributor of heroin and various others narcotics.
As Breitbart Texas previously reported, Guzman turned the Mexican government into the subject of thousands of jokes after carrying out a daring prison escape in 2015. Riding a motorcycle powered railcar through a mile long tunnel, Guzman was able to flee from one of Mexico’s maximum security prisons. The escape was yet another effort to avoid being extradited to the U.S. where the drug lord is facing multiple federal charges tied to drug trafficking and organized crime activities. Guzman is also facing federal murder charges in Texas in connection with the activities carried out by the Sinaloa Cartel, Breitbart Texas previously reported.
Mexican authorities arrested El Chapo in January 2016 after a fierce gun battle with some of his bodyguards. At the time of the arrest, Breitbart Texas published a series of graphic photos that revealed the carnage that took place during the gun battle. Currently El Chapo is in a federal prison in Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua where he is awaiting his extradition to the United Stated.
It remains unclear if the kidnapping of Guzman’s son is tied to an ongoing dispute with the Beltran Leyva Cartel. The tension between those two groups came to a head in June when gunmen with the Beltran Leyva Cartel drove into Guzman’s hometown where they ransacked the home where El Chapo’s mother lived, Breitbart Texas previously reported.
