A Texas woman was killed by a Fulshear, Texas, police officer after she shot two of her daughters in the street in front of her home.
Christy Sheats, 42, had already killed one of the daughters and had shot the second one as police arrived on the scene late Friday afternoon. She poised to shoot again when the police officer opened fire, killing the woman, KTRK ABC13 reported.
Fort Bend Sheriff Troy Nehls told reporters one of the daughters died at the scene of the shooting. The second daughter was taken by a Life Flight air ambulance to a trauma center where she was initially listed in critical condition. She later died from her gunshot wound. The father of the young women, who is also the husband to the shooter, was taken by ambulance to a hospital. He had not been injured in the shooting.
The daughters were identified by the Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office as Taylor Sheats, 22, and Madison Sheats, 17.
The Fulshear police officer reportedly fired one shot at Christy Sheats. That shot proved to be fatal.
A motive for the shooting was not immediately clear, Nehls told reporters. He did; however, tell the Houston Chronicle that “It was a family argument that turned into a shooting. But, we’re still trying to put the pieces together.”
“It would be too premature to give you a motive as to why something like this took place,” he told ABC13. “The best we can to pray for the father and husband so he can work through this.”
Neighbors were shocked at the shooting in this quite upscale neighborhood located just southwest of Houston.
“Those parents are good. They are hard-working,” a neighbor who wanted to stay anonymous told the local ABC affiliate. “Very good family. I do not know how this happened. So I cannot believe that.”
