A Texas man has been sentenced to over forty-seven years in a federal prison for attempted murder of a U.S. Border Patrol agent. The man was wanted on state charges out of Midland for murder and attempted murder and shot at an agent after U.S. Border Patrol agents pursued him.

In February, a jury found 50-year-old Carl Wayne Wiley guilty of one count of attempting to kill one or more border patrol agents who were engaged in the performance of their official duties, Breitbart Texas reported. He was also convicted of one count of assaulting, resisting, opposing, impeding, or interfering with one or more border patrol agents by using a deadly or a dangerous weapon, two counts of using and discharging a .45 caliber Ruger revolver during and in relation to the commission of these crimes of violence, and one count of assaulting, resisting, or impeding U.S. Border Patrol agents.

Wiley was fleeing prosecution from state charges in Texas when he was seen by border patrol agents in Sanderson, Terrell County, Texas, on June 29, 2014. Terrell County is located on the Texas-Mexico border. A high-speed pursuit ended up with Wiley crashing his vehicle. He took off on foot into the brush and avoided arrest by stealing an ATV. He then stole a pickup truck from a ranch in the area. He also stole several firearms.

A day later on June 30, Wiley was traveling near the Comstock Border Patrol Checkpoint when an agent attempted to conduct a vehicle stop. The Comstock Station is part of the Del Rio Sector. It was founded in 1925 and is one of the original stations in the sector.

The agent activated the emergency equipment on his vehicle and Wiley took off but crashed through a fence on a ranch. He continued driving across the pasture but his vehicle eventually came to a stop after he collided with a tree. Wiley took off running into the brush and agents followed Wiley in a foot pursuit. During the chase, Wiley shot at one agent who was getting close to him. He also fired a weapon at a group of advancing agents. He dropped his weapon and was arrested after he was surrounded.

In addition to serving over 47 years, the now 50-year-old man will be on supervised release for three years if he lives to be released from prison.
