Federal authorities working at Texas/Mexico border crossings arrested two women in separate incidents who were allegedly smuggling a total of $250,000 in methamphetamine.
The first incident occurred at the Hidalgo-Reynosa International Bridge on Thursday. A 19-year-old woman from San Juan, Texas, was crossing the pedestrian walkway from Reynosa, Mexico, into the U.S. when a K-9 officer detected the presence of drugs, a statement obtained from U.S. Customs and Border Protection by Breitbart Texas revealed.
At the secondary inspection station, customs officers discovered two packages of alleged methamphetamine on her body. The two packages weighed just over one pound. The street value was determined by authorities to be about $24,000.
Also on Thursday, officers working the Anzalduas-Reynosa International Bridge encountered a 25-year-old woman from Reynosa, Mexico. She was driving across the bridge from Mexico in a 2008 Dodge Avenger. Officers used a non-intrusive imaging system to examine the vehicle. It was also searched by a K-9 officer.
Further inspection of the vehicle revealed five packages, allegedly filled with about 11 pounds of methamphetamine. The packages were removed from the vehicle. Officials estimated the street value to be about $226,000. This brought the days total seizures of methamphetamine at the two bridges to about a quarter-million dollars.
“As smugglers continue to attempt to introduce illegal narcotics into our country, our officers remain vigilant and are determined to make interceptions,” Port Director Efrain Solis Jr. said in the written statement. “I commend our officers for their tenacity towards the CBP mission of keeping drugs from entering our country.”
Both of the drug seizures were made with the assistance of K-9 drug detecting officers. These K-9 teams have repeatedly proven to be effective tools at alerting U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers to the presence of narcotics.
