A woman who was attacked by six dogs in South Dallas, Texas, has now died. Antoinette Brown’s mother was reported to say the attack was like the dogs were eating her daughter, “like they was eating a steak.”
Fifty-two-year-old Antoinette Brown was attacked on May 2 and placed into a medically-induced coma. After a week in the hospital, she has unfortunately succumb to her injuries.
Ms. Brown was bitten by the wild dogs more than 100 times reported The Dallas Morning News. She was in the hospital “after the dogs peeled off skin, exposing muscles and tendons,” reported the Dallas paper. Brown’s mother made the comments to the publication about the dogs eating her daughter.
Residents have complained about aggressive dogs running the streets, CBSDFW reported.
The attack happened in a vacant lot next to Jackie Humphrey’s home. She could hear screaming and pleas for help from her bedroom window.
“I heard begging, someone please, someone please, please help me,” said Humphrey to the CBS affiliate. “I was glad I went on and called 911 because she could have died [right there].”
The woman’s son, LeQuan said that his mother was a veteran and had served in the U.S. Army.
Mayor Mike Rawlings admits “The priority has not been high enough obviously.” Progress is great, but we were in deep hope and we have a long way to go.”
He now promises to make sure that the city does a better job at taking dangerous and aggressive dogs off the streets.
The Dallas mayor said that no one contacted Dallas Animal Service prior to the attack. Residents tell a different story.
Dallas resident Jackie Humphrey told CBSDFW that she called the city and they asked whether the dogs were attacking. Because the woman answered that they had not yet attacked anyone, the situation was placed on a lower priority. The city promised only to respond within 72 hours.
Devante Johnson and Antyuan Beachuman said they faced three wild dogs in the South Dallas neighborhood. They were lucky not to have been attacked. “I just stood there. I told him don’t run, stay calm. That’s what I was told by my grannie and mama, so I knew what to do. I was nervous for a minute, but I just stayed calm,” Johnson was reported to say.
Another woman who is wheelchair bound, Sharon Roberts, said “I used to chase them with a stick caused they killed my cats and I was so angry and I’d chase them. I thank God they didn’t turn on me.”
The local CBS affiliate reported that it took days for the city to pick up the six dogs after the attack.
