No Glasses for Rick Perry’s Portrait

The official portrait unveiling for the longest serving governor in the Lone Star State, Rick Perry, was held at the Texas Capitol on Friday. The question asked most often in advance of the unveiling was whether the portrait would show the governor with or without his famous glasses.

The answer to the question, unveiled for those in the Capitol Rotunda to see Friday morning, was No.

Hundreds of friends, family members, and supporters were there to watch the Rick Perry portrait unveiled. Governor Abbott, who served as Texas Attorney General when Perry was governor, attended the event.

To get ready for the unveiling, the portraits of the 51 prior governors and presidents of the Republic of Texas had to be rotated around the Rotunda. The curator of the Capitol, Ali James, said in advance of the unveiling that the portrait was “stunning.” He also said that the portrait really captured Goveror Perry.

The forty-seventh governor of the state posed for artist James Tennison who painted the official portrait. Tennison also painted the official portrait of the last Democrat to serve as governor in the state, Ann Richards. Richards served as the State’s 45th governor. Tennison is a native Texan and lives in Fort Worth.

Evidence of Perry’s beloved alma mater, Texas A&M University, was reported to be placed in the portrait, Dallas Morning News’ Bobby C. Blanchard’s tweeted.

Perry served fourteen years as governor, from December 2000 to January 2015. He succeeded Governor George W. Bush when Bush became the 43rd president of the United States. Perry served as lieutenant governor when Bush was governor.

He is the second longest serving governor of any governor in the United States.

The two-time GOP presidential candidate from Paint Creek, Texas, served twice as chairman of the Republican Governors Association.
