Authorities in California are reporting the discovery of a tunnel leading from Mexico into the California desert.
The discovery was made in the town of Calexico. It connects across the border into Mexicali, Mexico, the Associated Press reported. The location of the tunnel offers easy access to freeways that lead to Phoenix and Los Angeles.
The region is controlled by the Sinaloa drug cartel for the purposes of drug trafficking and smuggling of illegal aliens.
In January, Breitbart Texas reported on another tunnel that was discovered in Arizona when it collapsed under its own weight. That tunnel had not yet been completed but was about two feet wide and three feet tall. It was about 122 feet in length. When it collapsed, it was only one foot inside the United States, according to the U.S. Customs and Border Protection statement. That tunnel was found near the town of Nogales in southern Arizona.
Two other tunnels were found in southern California in April 2015, Breitbart Texas reported. One tunnel, measuring 230 feet in length, also stretched from Mexicali to Calexico. That tunnel was four feet high and four feet wide. It was equipped with lighting and ventilation. When the tunnel was discovered, $694,000 in methamphetamine was found in 25 vacuum-packed packages.
The second tunnel was found a couple of days later in Tijuana, Mexico. It had not yet been completed into the U.S.
More than 80 tunnels of this nature have been found crossing from Mexico into the United States since 2006, authorities claimed. When the tunnels are found, they are usually filled with concrete at a cost of hundreds of thousands of taxpayer dollars.
A press conference on the newly discovered tunnel is expected to be held Wednesday afternoon in Calexico.
