A New Mexico woman who had been released after making bond on a series of arson charges has been re-arrested by local police.
Citing concerns over public safety, Officers with the Clovis Police Department re-arrested Angie Madrid shortly after her release from jail on a $40,000 bond. Madrid had been charged with two arsons dating back to 2014 and five additional arsons which occurred on Thursday night.
A local judge had set a $40,000 cash or surety bond for Madrid on the arson charges. Because of the surety bond, she was able to pay a $4,000 bonding fee to a local bond company and get released from the Curry County Detention Center, according to the Clovis News Journal.
She was released from the jail at 9:47 p.m on Friday. Upon learning that Madrid was to be released on the surety bond, police worked quickly to file additional charges to have her re-arrested. That arrest occurred Friday night and at 10:23 p.m., Madrid was back in jail, Curry County jail administrator Mark Gallegos told the local newspaper.
Her bond for the new charges was set at $105,000 – cash only.
“Due to overwhelming concern for the safety of our community and the continued threats to members of the community and businesses by this individual, the Clovis Police Department and 9th Judicial District Attorney’s Office felt it imperative to take the necessary steps to keep Madrid from committing any other crimes of this magnitude,” the Clovis Police Department announced in a Saturday press statement obtained by Breitbart Texas.
When Madrid initially appeared before Magistrate Court Judge Duane Castleberry, her bond was reduced and changed from cash only to a surety bond. This enabled the suspected serial arsonist to make bond and be released from the jail.
Madrid now faces additional charges of Possession of Burglary Tools, Aggravated Burglary, Felon in Possession of a Destructive Device, and Possession of Explosive device or Incendiary Device, the press release stated.
Clovis Police Sergeant Trevor Thron told Breitbart Texas that Madrid has issues and the they have had to deal with her in the past.
On the night of her initial arrest, police observed Madrid standing in front of a building with a hammer in her hand and carrying a pressure sprayer filled with gasoline. The press release from Clovis police indicates that Madrid confessed to starting a series of five fires on Thursday.
Madrid told police that “something bad was going to happen to the State of New Mexico,” according to the police statement, and that she “wanted to make sure people would get their insurance money.”
Police obtained a search warrant and found lighters, a blow torch, a gas can, a pressure sprayer, and a hammer. She was booked that night on four charges of arson under $20,000, 1 count of arson over $20,000 and criminal damage over $1,000.
She had previously been arrested in mid to late 2015 on several felony arson charges that are still pending.
The woman has faced numerous charges in Curry County since 2014. Those include receiving and transferring stolen motor vehicles, improper handling of fire, residential burglary, larceny, arson and tampering with evidence.
Madrid remains jailed in the Curry County Detention Center in Clovis.
