Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto has announced the capture of fugitive drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman Loera.
On Friday shortly afternoon, Pena Nieto took to twitter to announce “Mission accomplished we have him.”
According to information provided to Breitbart Texas by the Mexican Navy, the operation took place at a house in Los Mochis, Sinaloa, where Mexican Marines came under fire. One Mexican Marine and five gunmen died.
According to the official version, the Mexican Marines were responding to an anonymous tip about gunmen in a residence and when they arrived they came under fire. The gunmen who were inside the residence had assault rifles and a rocket launcher as well as two armored vehicles.
During the shootout, authorities killed five gunmen and arrested six others. The Mexican navy confirmed that one of the targets in the house who appears to have escaped is Ivan “El Cholo” Gastellum, one of El Chapo’s top enforcers.
According to Mexican news outlets, the gunfight was so intense that the military needed air support from helicopters.
As previously reported by Breitbart Texas, Guzman escaped last July from one of Mexico’s maximum security prisons by using a mile long tunnel and a motorcycle powered rail-car.
Since then, the Sinaloa drug lord has become a media sensation as news outlets continued to speculate as to his whereabouts.
While official information remains scant, preliminary information points to Guzman getting caught in Los Mochis, Sinaloa, where Mexican Marines took part in a fierce gun battle and had to use two helicopters to provide aerial support, Mexican media reported.
