Chick-fil-A made an exception and opened its doors on Sunday to allow volunteers to work to help victims of the deadly tornadoes in Texas.
Some of the locations in northeast Texas opened in order to help those who were victims of the tornadoes and those who were helping them. The stores were not open to the public.
Founder Truett Cathy opened his first restaurant in 1946. Chick-fil-A is based in Atlanta and has been closed on Sundays since its creation.
The company policy is designed to allow employees to rest and be with family, and attend a house of worship if they desire.
As reported by CNBC, a spokeswoman for the food chain told the media outlet, “The locations were not open to the public, but team members from various restaurants in the area did volunteer to prepare and distribute free food to responders and others affected by the tornadoes, serving those in need during this tragic event.”
As reported by Breitbart Texas, deady tornadoes ripped through areas around Dallas ravishing homes, and killing eleven. There was also a large tornado reported on Saturday evening just south of Dallas in DeSoto. A tornado hit eastern Ellis County immediately south of DeSoto shortly after that.
Eight people lost their lives in Garland, Texas, when they were caught up in the storms while on Texas roads on Interstate 30 and the George Bush Turnpike. The Dallas Morning News also reported that about two square miles to the southwest and northeast of the interstate and the turnpike was devastated by a tornado. About 600 buildings were reported to be damaged or leveled. Most of these were single-family residences.
Texas Governor Greg Abbott declared a state of disaster for Texas counties affected by the severe weather, as reported by Breitbart Texas. These counties include those counties in the northern part of the state that were hit by severe winds, storms, and tornadoes. Thousands of Texans were left without power.
The declaration applies to Collin, Dallas, Ellis, and Rockwall counties. It authorizes the use of all available resources of state government and of local politicial subdivisions. The Governor said that the Texas State Guard and the National Guard are included in these resources.
Chick-fil-A has often been the subject of attack by left-of-center organizations because of its Christian beliefs. In August, Breitbart’s Austin Ruse reported that members of the Denver City Council attempted to block the chain from opening a shop in the Denver International Airport.
In September, 2014, a Chick-fil-A was banned from donating sandwiches to a high school booster club because the principal didn’t like the company’s position on gay marriage, Breitbart’s William Bigelow reported.
While the company’s founder, Jeannette Cathy, passed away earlier this year, the company continues to carry on its tradition of honoring the Christian principles upon which the company was founded.
