A resolution that would have put Texas secession on the ballot for Republican primary voters has failed. Although the measure cleared its first hurdle by passing the 12-member Republican Party of Texas’ Resolution Committee, it failed soundly when submitted to the entire body of the State Republican Executive Committee (SREC).
As reported by Breitbart Texas, Tanya Robertson, a member of the SREC for Senate District 11, was promoting the idea and presented the resolution to both the resolutions committee on December 4, and to the 62-member body of the SREC on December 5. The meetings were held in Austin, Texas.
From the onset, Texas Republican State Party Chairman Tom Mechler was reported to say he did not believe there was support within the SREC to approve Robertson’s resolution, as reported by Breitbart Texas.
On Friday, the resolution was submitted to a vote by the resolutions committee after language was agreed upon. As reported by Breitbart Texas, six people spoke for the resolution and no one spoke against it. The resolution passed by a vote of the committee by 7 to 4.
As passed by the resolution committee, the wording of the resolution was follows:
If the federal government continues to disregard the Constitution and the sovereignty of the State of Texas, the State of Texas and its people should reassert its prior status as an independent nation.
The resolution was submitted on Saturday to the full 62-member body of the SREC by a voice vote. The resolution was soundly defeated. A call for a roll call vote was also defeated.
Robertston has maintained that Texas independence should be put before the voters because Texans are dissatisfied with Washington D.C. representatives and excessive federal government spending.
Dwayne Stovall, who ran against Senator John Cornyn, told Breitbart Texas, “Listening to committee members discuss a resolution on independence was a great example of how little understanding most of us have about the federal system of government on which the U.S. Constitution is based.” Stovall supports the right of Texans to vote on the issue of Texas independence.
If the resolution had passed the SREC and had been submitted to primary voters, it would have been a non-binding measure.
