In a sports version of “Dewey Beats Truman,” Texas Governor Greg Abbott tweeted out congratulations to the Houston Astros on winning the ALDS before the Kansas City Royals stormed back to force a Game Five.
Within the same Tweet the governor said “hoping for an all-Texas #ALDS. Looking at you @Rangers.” The Rangers shortly thereafter dropped Game Four to the Blue Jays 8-4.
Down 6-2 in the eighth when the governor jinxed their opponents, the Royals rallied. A series of singles, ground outs, and errors by their adversaries plated four runners to put Kansas City up 7-6. Royals first baseman Eric Hosmer added a two-run insurance homer in the ninth. Houston bats, unlike the governor’s Twitter account, remained quiet for the remainder of the game.
Abbott regularly mixes matters of sport and state on Twitter. He recently compared the Dallas Cowboys defense to the Lone Star State’s “porous” southern border and gently suggested that Jerry Jones give Tim Tebow a shot after quarterback Tim Tebow broke his collarbone.
It ain’t over, reminded Texas Tech sports information director Ralph Carpenter, “until the fat lady sings.” That’s true of sports and politics.
