LA JOYA, Texas — Cartel smugglers attempted to sneak drugs in fence posts across the Rio Grande River. Smugglers hid close to 500 pounds of marijuana inside hollowed out wooden posts in an effort to fool law enforcement. The plot failed miserably and the drugs that were being smuggled were confiscated.
The drug seizure took place on Wednesday when agents spotted a group of smugglers moving wooden posts across the river, information provided to Breitbart Texas by the U.S. Border Patrol revealed.
Authorities called for a helicopter to help in the operation. As agents arrived the drug smugglers dropped their load and ran back towards the river and fleeing back to Mexico.
The agents were able to recover 20 wooden posts which had been hollowed out so that they could hide 230 marijuana packets.
“Drug trafficking organizations resort to desperate measures in an attempt to get their illicit cargo into the United States,” said Acting Chief Patrol Agent Raul Ortiz in a prepared statement. “Our agents remain vigilant and will continue to thwart narcotic trafficking efforts despite the tactics used by smugglers.”
