Nearly two-thirds of Texas Republican voters polled say that Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton should resign. The poll comes in the wake of three indictments related to securities fraud that were handed down against the State’s current top law enforcement officer.
The poll was conducted among Texas GOP likely voters on August 15th. It was conducted by a Florida polling company, Gravis Marketing on behalf of the Texas Bipartisan Justice Committee, according to the San Antonio Express-News article by Peggy Fikak. The treasurer for the group, John Coppedge of Longview, is a backer of Paxton’s former Republican 2014 Primary run-off opponent, former State Representative Dan Branch.
The poll states that 78 percent of Republican voters are aware of Paxton’s legal problems and nearly two-thirds, 62 percent, believe the Attorney General should step down.
Paxton won his election with strong support from Texas tea party voters. The poll reveals that more than half, 53 percent, of those who identified themselves as tea party voters said the Texas AG should resign.
Just over one-third of those polled said they had actually voted for Paxton in the Republican Primary. Almost half of those polled said they voted for someone else in the race and 18 percent said they did not recall who they voted for. Less than 5 percent said they had not voted in last year’s primary election.
Paxton has repeatedly stated he will not resign from office and that he expects to be fully exonerated through the legal process.
According to the polling organization (Documents attached below):
The poll, conducted Aug. 15, 2015 was a random statewide survey of 976 likely Republican voters in Texas regarding opinions of national and Texas politics. The poll was conducted using IVR technology by Gravis Marketing, a nationally recognized Florida-based marketing and polling firm. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percent. Gravis Marketing was the recipient of the 2013 American Association of Political Consultants award for 2012 Presidential Primary domestic and international phone calls.
