Famed Mexican top capo Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman Loera had been targeted by teams of foreign mercenaries traveling to Mexico to kill him, his attorney in Mexico said.
The bombshell revelation is the reason why his attorney Juan Pablo Badillo Soto asked for an “amparo,” a restraining order of sorts, to shield his client from extradition, Mexico’s SinEmbargo.Mx reported.
“At a certain moment there was a very worrisome situation in the sense that foreign mercenaries were coming to kill him, they would come to take his life, to murder him, that is very grave, how is it possible that they implemented such absurd strategies, it is based on these conditions that the ‘amparo’ is requested” Badillo is quoted in the story speaking out against arbitrary acts by the Mexican government.
The attorney claimed in his request for an “amparo,” which a Mexican court granted, that if extradited his client would be subject to torture and could face the death penalty in the United States.
Guzman Loera became a worldwide sensation this summer when he escaped from a maximum security prison in Mexico for a second time. In the most recent escape, Guzman had his henchmen dig a mile-long, state-of-the-art tunnel from a nearby structure to the area right under his cell.
The El Chapo’s escape acted as a brutal slap in the face to Mexican president Enrique Pena Nieto, who had used Guzman’s capture as a trophy and had claimed that an escape would be inexcusable, Breitbart Texas reported.
Even before his escape, Guzman Loera had already gained much notoriety for helping turn the Sinaloa Cartel into not only the largest most powerful cartel in Mexico but also one of the most powerful criminal organizations world-wide.
In addition to using cars, trucks, tunnels, ships, drones, submarines, and multiple other means to smuggle drugs, Guzman’s cartel also relies on various armies of highly skilled gunmen able to go toe to toe with the Mexican military.
Guzman Loera was even featured on Forbes as a drug trafficker and self-made billionaire, considered by the publication as one of the “World’s Most Powerful People”.
According to Forbes, Guzman’s cartel is responsible for an estimated 25% of all illegal drugs that enter the U.S. via Mexico and his organization is believed to generate yearly revenues of over $3 billion.
