A horde of angry taxicab drivers attacked users of the ride-sharing app Uber in Mexico City. The assailants vandalized various cars in an effort to halt the use of the app.
Mexico’s La Jornada newspaper videotaped the attack that occured this week near Mexico City’s airport and then shared the footage on Youtube.com.
The video shows a horde of protesters kicking cars, and throwing rocks, eggs, and flour at a passing motorist who they suspect of driving for Uber.
One of the drivers then stopped to talk with La Jornada’s reporter and claimed that he was there to pick up a relative and was not a user of the ride-sharing application.
“What happened near the Airport is a very grave attack on a person’s right to make a living in a dignified fashion. We condemn any act of violence,” officials with Uber in Mexico City posted on social media soon after the attack.
In recent months, cab drivers in Mexico City have been outraged over the rise of ride-sharing apps such as Uber and Cabify. The established taxi drivers claim that the online-based competition takes away business even though they are not registered with the government.
