BROWNSVILLE, Texas—A Texas family remains in limbo as they try to find out if the body of a partially nude elderly man found near a shopping center in the Mexican city of Matamoros is in fact their loved one who went missing more than 11 days ago.
On July 14, Brownsville police announced through a prepared statement the search for 94-year-old Florencio Hernandez, who left home on July 11 and never returned. At the time of the search, authorities had released the man’s photo as well as informed the public of Hernandez’s various medical issues, including Alzheimer’s and diabetes.
Two days later authorities announced that they reviewed surveillance video at one of the international bridges in that city and had confirmed that Hernandez had walked into Mexico.
The questions in that case increased when this week El Manana newspaper reported on a body that was found near a shopping center in Matamoros. The video taken by the Mexican newspaper appears to show clothes lying around and an empty wallet near the scene where firefighters found the body.
Authorities in Mexico have not publicly identified the body and the Brownsville Herald reports that local police have not yet been able to confirm if the body is in fact the missing Texas man.
