MATAMOROS, Tamaulipas—Mexican authorities continue to find clandestine radio antennas used by Gulf Cartel members to establish their communication network.
As previously reported by Breitbart Texas, the Gulf Cartel has had a history of placing radio antennas and video surveillance equipment around various border cities in an effort to have sets of eyes and ears around their territories.
So far, Tamaulipas authorities have seized 65 clandestine radio antennas, 39 of which were set in the border city of Reynosa, information provided to Breitbart Texas by the Tamaulipas government revealed.
One of the recently seized antennas was found on June 19 in the border town of Rio Bravo. In that seizure, Tamaulipas state police officers spotted a telephone-like structure with a two-way directional antenna by the intersection of Sal Luis Potosi and Chiapas streets.
The second seizure came just two days later on June 21, when state police officers patrolling near the Olmito neighborhood in Reynosa spotted a repeater antenna and dismantled it.
On June 25, Mexican authorities followed-up on an anonymous tip in the city of San Fernando and discovered another clandestine radio antenna on top of a telephone tower. The clandestine tower was constructed using to white PVC pipes with coaxial cables and two black radio frequency boxes.
On June 27, Tamaulipas authorities seized three other radio repeater stations all placed on top of telephone towers in the city of Rio Bravo.
