As reported last week, there have been large anti-corruption demonstrations in Guatemala every Saturday. These are actually “manifestaciones.” They are totally unlike our Baltimore demonstrations in which protesters attack police, burn cars, and loot. These are peaceful movements with people doing their civic duty to protest political corruption.
What is new is that last week, the Guatemalan Supreme Court declared Congress can strip the president of his immunity. This week, Congress is actively investigating the president for corruption. Last Saturday there was another massive manifestacion in heavy rain. Last Sunday, there was even a small protest demonstration at the Houston Guatemalan Consulate General.
Perhaps as a result of social media, there are nightly protest demonstrations in Honduras to remove President Juan Orlando Hernandez.
There are also demonstrations in Brazil, Chile, Ecuador, and Mexico.
Ex-presidents in Costa Rica, Guatemala, and Nicaragua are being investigated for corruption.
Ex- President Martinelli in Panama has fled the country for Ireland and several of his ex-cabinet members have been arrested and others are being investigated for corruption.
