The Mexican government has announced the capture of the man described as the heir to the Juarez Cartel. The capture of Jesus “El Chuyin” Salas Aguayo was not an easy one since the capo and his men appear to have put up a fight in the town of Ahumada Chihuahua. The firefight left at least one person dead and led to Mexican authorities seizing various vehicles, weapons, communication equipment and drugs, said Mexico’s National Security Commissioner Monte Alejandro Rubido in a televised press conference.

Rubido described Salas Aguayo as the capo who had inherited the Juarez Cartel following last October’s capture of Vicente “Viceroy” Carrillo Fuentes. He was the last of the Carrillo Fuentes brothers who had taken the helm of the fearsome criminal organization. David Aaron Espinoza Haro, who was Carrillo Fuentes’ right hand man, was also captured at that time.

The Mexican government wanted Salas Aguayo not only for charges related to leading the drug cartel which funnels most of its drugs into El Paso, but also in connection with a 2010 car bomb that killed two Mexican federal police officers, a doctor and an EMT in Ciudad Juarez, the National Security Commissioner said during the interview.

Salas Aguayo is part of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration’s most wanted fugitives. Four pending charges in the U.S. Federal court tied to drug trafficking as well as a pending state charge for a 2009 murder in El Paso await him should he be extradited to the United States.
