BROWNSVILLE, Texas – It appears the Gulf Cartel has officially gone “tacti-cool” after federal agents arrested a legal alien from Mexico who confessed to having smuggled 50 pistol to carbine conversion kits into Mexico. This is the scene where various factions of the Gulf cartel continue to fight for control of the area.
While not firearms, conversion kits are attachments that allow a handgun to be held and fired like a carbine adding more stability to the shooter while still firing handgun rounds. The kits are quite popular among recreational shooters however competitive shooters tend to frown on them. Many consider the pistol-carbine conversion kit to be more of a trend that falls in the “tacti-cool” category, a term used to refer to items that are more aesthetic than practical. The kits range in price from $400-$500 and their use requires an additional tax and registry from the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco Firearms and Explosives.
The case began on February 12 when agents with Homeland Security Investigations learned that Ruben Sosa had placed an order for 50 Roni G-2 pistol to carbine conversion kits, court documents obtained by Breitbart Texas revealed.
On March 27, Sosa was crossing an international bridge from Matamoros to Brownsville when HSI agents pulled him into an interview. During the interview, they asked Sosa about the purchase of the kits. He told the agents that he purchased them and transported them into Mexico. Sosa remains in federal custody awaiting trial.
As Breitbart Texas previously reported, the Gulf Cartel continues to be involved in a series of internal conflicts that have resulted in large firefights around the border cities of Matamoros, Reynosa and Camargo.
