A group of cartel hitmen failed in their attempt to assassinate the mayor of the Mexican border city of Matamoros. The attempted assassination can only be described as the boldest move made by one of the warring cartel factions in recent months.
The attack took place when the security convoy where Matamoros Mayor Leticia Salazar was travelling came under fire by a group of hitmen, information provided by the Tamaulipas government revealed.
The Matamoros mayor was travelling with her escort on the city’s west side when the attack took place, neither she nor her staff was hurt, Tamaulipas officials confirmed.
The gunmen were riding in a Grey Ford Focus and in a White Suburban when they opened fire upon Salazar’s security detail.
As Breitbart Texas previously reported, Salazar has been the only Mexican mayor in the border state of Tamaulipas who has spoken out about the raging violence being brought to her city by the warring factions of the Gulf Cartel. The Tamaulipas government on the other hand has tried to suppress the information about the almost daily shootouts that began in February, as Breitbart Texas previously reported.
Salazar’s refusal to stay quiet has made her the target of multiple unsupported hit pieces by the local news outlets. One of the most evident attacks took place when Matamoros news outlets claimed that her security forces called Grupo Hercules had killed a Texas woman and her two brothers in an attempt to steal their vehicle. The story spread like wildfire fooling even major Mexican and U.S. news outlets; however an investigation by Breitbart Texas revealed that the three siblings had deep ties to the Gulf Cartel and had been killed by their colleagues over a dispute regarding stolen fuel. Breitbart Texas published an exclusive document that showed the siblings had been previously arrested by the U.S. Border Patrol in a failed attempt to smuggle drugs.
