A group of gunmen killed Mexico’s top naval officer in the port city of Lazaro Cardenas in what appears to be a violent carjacking gone wrong. Counter-Admiral Jose Luis Corro Chavez who served as the Port Captain in the city of Lazaro Cardenas in the State of Michoacán died as a result of his gunshot injuries during the robbery, information provided to Breitbart Texas by the Mexican Navy revealed.
Corro Chavez had been in Lazaro Cardenas since 2013 where he worked to improve transparency and rule of law in the area, the information provided by the Mexican Navy revealed.
Lazaro Cardenas has one of the main deep sea ports in Mexico which makes it a high value target for criminal organizations looking to smuggler large quantities of drug precursors. In the past the Mexican navy has made successful seizures of massive quantities of cocaine and meth precursors.
Michoacán is the home turf of the ultra-violent Knights Templar cartel, which has been fighting for control of the region with Los Viagras and Los Zetas. The Sinaloa Federation and their allies with the Gulf Cartel also are said to have assets in the Lazaro Cardenas area.
As previously reported by Breitbart Texas, the raging violence in Michoacán and the Knights Templar’s ties to the highest levels of state government led to the previous governor stepping down after his son was tied to Knights Templar’s top boss Servando “La Tuta” Gomez. On February 27th, Gomez was arrested by federal authorities.
