The Mexican state of Guerrero, known for the massacre of 43 education students five months ago, has once again fallen into lawlessness as rival cartel members fight for control of the area. The recent spark of violence has killed 14 individuals in just 72 hours in the most recent escalation of violence.
The resort city of Acapulco in that state has also seen its share of violence with a death toll to 137 since December. While cartel violence in that state has been raging on quietly in recent years, the intricate network of connections between cartel members and politicians became public following the September massacre of the students when Mexico’s Attorney General’s Office publicly linked the mayor of the Town of Iguala and his wife to the drug cartel called Guerreros Unidos, Mexico’s El Universal reported.
As Breitbart Texas previously reported the volatile situation in Acapulco event prompted the U.S. Embassy to issue out a travel alert last year warning tourists to avoid the resort area.
Guerreros Unidos is the same drug cartel credited with the violent kidnapping of the 43 students in September 2014 where 6 people were murdered and dozens were also injured. Mexican officials have since said that the 43 students were mistaken for rival cartel members and their bodies were burned to ash in a nearby dumpster, Breitbart Texas previously reported.
As a response to the violence, Mexico’s Secretary of the Interior Miguel Osorio Chong dispatched the new Federal Gendarmerie however the police group has done little to stop the escalating number of murders in the region since their arrival in December.
Last month two cartel gunmen riding a motorcycle gunned down Norma Angelica Bruno Roman, one of the activists who has been working to get answers about the murder of the 43 education students. Bruno Roman was gunned down as she walked in the funeral procession of a young local man who was killed two days before in a soccer field, Mexico’s Proceso magazine reported.
Just last week, cartel gunmen went on a rampage in the rural towns of Guerrero killing a number of local officials as well as a pregnant woman and her 21-year-old son, Mexico’s El Universal reported.
