MCALLEN, Texas — A Texas border police chief has been arrested on fourteen felony charges of tampering with government records.
Agents with the Cameron County District Attorney’s Office, Texas Rangers, and the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) arrested Indian Lake Police Chief John Chambers, according to information released to Breitbart Texas by prosecutors.
The arrest came moments after a grand jury handed down a 14 count indictment against Chambers that accuses him of entering false information into government records on January 13 about the firearms qualifications of some of his deputies, the information from the Cameron County DA’s Office revealed.
Indian Lake is a small border town of about 650 residents.
The charges are third degree felonies, meaning that if Chambers is convicted, he could face a maximum sentence of 10-years in prison per charge, as well as a $10,000 fine. If convicted, Chambers would also lose his Texas law enforcement license.
As Breitbart Texas has previously reported, corruption along the Texas border has been so disproportionate with the rest of the country that the FBI recently started a public corruption task force to specifically focus on that type of crime.
In September 2014, Chambers was also indicted on official oppression charges after he allegedly went outside of his jurisdiction to recover a truck from his wife’s security company that an employee had failed to return, according to a report by KGBT. In his statements made to the local TV station, regarding that indictment, Chambers claimed that he was the target of selective prosecutions since he intended to run for sheriff as a Republican in the upcoming election.
