A deadly ambush by a drug cartel resulted in the death of a Mexican police officer and two of his colleagues getting shot. As the officers fought for their lives, they killed a cartel gunman and injured two others.
The shootout took place on the highway that leads to a rural town near the Mexican city of Miguel Aleman, which is just south of Roma, Texas, information released to Breitbart Texas by the Tamaulipas Government revealed.
The police officers were part of a group of Tamaulipas State Police Officers that was headed to run some errands in the rural towns when a group of cartel gunmen set an ambush and began firing at them, officials said.
Tamaulipas officer Jorge Armando Romero Rodríguez died while trying to fight off the attack. Two of his teammates were also shot but are expected to recuperate.
The police officers fatally wounded a 30-year-old from the Mexican state of Nuevo Leon and also shot his 25-year-old brother, as well as injuring and capturing a 19-year old from Reynosa.
For several years, the Mexican State of Tamaulipas has been the scene of fierce shootouts between drug cartels and the Mexican military. While the Mexican government claims that the security conditions have improved, as Breitbart Texas previously reported, previous Tamaulipas governors have been accused in U.S. federal courts of taking money from drug cartels in exchange for protection.
