Happy New Year from Breitbart Texas

As we close out 2014, our first year of publishing at Breitbart Texas, we have a lot of reasons to be thankful. We thought it would be fun to collect a few New Year’s Resolutions from across the state and share them with our readers. Some of the resolutions we received are serious, some less so, but we think it’s fair to say that everyone shares our feelings that we are blessed to live in Texas and are looking forward to 2015.

Texas Supreme Court Justice Don Willett:

Prize the pennies!

One of the gifts my wife got me for Christmas is 6 jars, 2 for each of the wee Willetts. 936 pennies are divided between the 2 jars, each penny representing 1 week of their lives with us from birth until age 18. One jar contains the pennies/weeks they have left. The other jar contains the weeks that are gone—forever. Every Sunday, I grudgingly move a penny from 1 jar to the other. For my 10-year-old, most of his pennies are in the “weeks gone” jar. For my 8-year-old, things are sadly nearing 50-50. And for my 5-year-old, it’s heartbreaking how much, and how quickly, time has flown by. The penny project is a jarring (so to speak) depiction of how achingly fleeting it all is. And for me, it’s a vivid, in-your-face reminder to savor and make joyful every irreplaceable moment with them.

State Senator-Elect Konni Burton (R-Colleyville):

In 2014, my family had a primary election, a primary run-off election, a high school graduation, a college graduation, a move to a college campus, a general election and a wedding! So, while I generally don’t do New Year resolutions, this year I’m thinkin’ that I will resolve to have fewer life changing events on the 2015 calendar!

Peggy Venable, Policy Advisor and past State Director, Americans for Prosperity-Texas:

New Year’s Resolutions force us to reassess our priorities. Mine are faith, family, and fighting for economic freedom. I am blessed to have opportunities, and am passionate about promoting policies which empower those less fortunate — assuring parents school choice, limiting government so individuals can start businesses, keep more of they money they work hard to earn, and create their own American dream. 2015 also gives me opportunity to help plan my daughter’s wedding – fortunately, it’s after legislative session!

Michael Quinn Sullivan, President, Empower Texans:

I resolve to make Progress Texas’ 10 Worst Texans list in 2015, and am embarrassed I didn’t make the cut this year. [Disclosure: Sullivan is a Breitbart Texas contributor.]

Congressman Pete Sessions (R-Texas):

My goal for 2015 is to work together with my colleagues in the House and the Senate to put forth common sense solutions and pass sound legislation that shows Americans that conservative republican solutions can give the American people the opportunities that they need and deserve to lead our great nation to a better place.

JoAnn Fleming, Executive Director, Grassroots America:

My New Year’s resolution: to help fire as many “Big Government” politicians as possible and replace them with limited government conservatives.

State Senator Charles Perry (R-Lubbock):

I hope my actions in 2015 will help solve the next generation’s challenges, without killing the same generation responsible for their next generation’s challenges.

Bill Powers, President, The University of Texas at Austin:

I have two New Year’s resolutions: write a book and go to the Final Four with the Longhorns.

Ryan Sitton, Texas Railroad Commissioner-Elect:

My 2015 New Year’s resolution: I want to teach 1,000 Texans how oil and gas is produced, as well as eat less than 20 grams of carbs per day!

Scott Braddock, Quorum Report:

I resolve not to make any resolutions.

George P. Bush, Texas Land Commissioner-Elect:

To continue being a loving and generous father to my son, Prescott, and a caring husband to my wife, Amanda.

To raise awareness of the many services provided by the Veterans Land Board, a division of the General Land Offices.  Advising veterans, active duty military members, and their families know what the GLO can do to serve them.

Continue to benefit public education for the children of Texas through prudent management of the state’s resources and the investment capital stemming from these assets.

Maintain a healthy lifestyle by going to Crossfit and pursuing a balanced diet.

Katrina Pierson, Founder Garland Tea Party:

My only son turned 18 Christmas day, so my resolution is take myself on a shopping spree and buy stuff just for me.
