The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) confirmed that a 2.8 magnitude earthquake rolled through the Dallas area at 8:10am (CT) on Tuesday, December 30, 2014.
It was the latest shaker in a series of small quakes to hit Irving and struck at Loop 12 and State Highway 183.
According to the Dallas Morning News, this actually marks the 16th tremor to come through the Dallas area since September 11. The strongest to hit the area measured a 3.4 magnitude.
The epicenter was located at Loop 12 and State Highway 183, not far from the old Texas Stadium and not far from Trinity East’s gas-drilling site on Tom Braniff Drive across from the University of Dallas. It sits atop the Balcones Fault, the Dallas Morning News added.
By California standards, these are but mere tremors but they frayed a few nerves. CBS DFW reported that Dallas radio station 1080 KRLD received calls from residents in the Las Colinas area who said they felt the shaking.
So far, none of the quakes have caused any damage. However, CBS DFW pointed out that this rash of baby-quakes have been fueling fears that hydraulic fracking for oil and natural gas is responsible, although these concerns are only speculative at this time.
