Graco, a leading brand name in baby furniture and accessories, is recalling five million of their baby strollers because of a fingertip amputation hazard, ABC News reported.
The company received reports of 11 finger injuries, including six reports of fingertip amputations, four reports of partial-fingertip amputation and one finger laceration, according to ABC News.
The recall affects 11 models of Graco strollers made from August 2000 to September 2014 — about 4.7 million strollers in the U.S., more than 200,000 in Canada and 10,300 in Mexico.
Owners are being told to contact Graco immediately to get a free repair kit and, before the kit comes, to “exercise extreme care” when unfolding and using the stroller. The problem is a hinge issue.
While waiting for the repair kit, Graco also advises to “be certain that the hinges are firmly locked before placing a child in the stroller” and to immediately remove the child from a stroller that begins to fold to keep their fingers from the side hinge area.
A US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) official told ABC News the fix is “very easy to install” and if parents just safely engage the lock, they can use the stroller until the new hinge cover arrives.
On their website, Graco states they are working in cooperation with the CPSC and are conducting a voluntary recall on select stroller models manufactured over the past 14 years.
The Graco stroller recalled models are Aspen, Breeze, Capri, Cirrus, Glider, Kite, LiteRider, Sierra, Solara, Sterling, and TravelMate Model Strollers and Travel Systems.
The company apologized in advance for any inconvenience caused in the matter on their recall notice.
