Drug cartel members from the Zeta cartel appear to be fearless when it comes to the massive military and police escort used by the governor of the Mexican state Tamaulipas. Cartel members ran over an 11-year-old in the border city of Nuevo Laredo despite the massive security detail.
Earlier this week, Tamaulipas Governor Egidio Torre Cantu traveled to Nuevo Laredo where he met with the state, federal and local department heads to announce the “success” of the security strategy kicked off earlier this year. The strategy was meant to curb the non-stop cartel violence that had fallen over the entire area. The area of Nuevo Laredo is largely under the control of the Zetas Cartel, a drug trafficking organization that has sought to distinguish themselves for their viciousness.
Despite the large security display during the vent, a group of cartel hitmen, fully armed and speeding through the streets of Nuevo Laredo, ran over an 11-year-old girl. The hitmen then crashed into an open-air shopping bazar and made a clean getaway on foot.
During the meeting, government officials touted the more than 1,160 arrests carried out since the strategy kicked off in May. In addition to the arrests, officials celebrated disarming drug cartel members with seizure of 1,532 rifles, 297 grenades, five rockets, 36 grenade launchers, 286 handguns, 23,231 ammunition magazines, 671,384 ammunition rounds and 1,953 vehicles.
