MCALLEN, Texas — A squad of gunmen riding in three SUV’s pulled into a rural home near the Texas border, stormed into the property, and shot one person during the robbery.
The home invasion took place in a rural area just north of Mercedes, Texas Friday evening, according to information provided to Breitbart Texas by the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office.
Witness statements show multiple gunmen stormed into the house for the robbery firing an unknown amount of shots with one of them striking a person inside the home. Medical personnel rushed the victim to a local hospital where he is expected to recover.
Investigators have not confirmed if the gunmen were looking for drugs or money, however in previous cases this year groups of gunmen have stormed into rural homes looking for drugs or cash that had been stored inside.
In South Texas, drug smugglers get their drugs from the banks of the Rio Grande and transport them to stash houses where they are stored before being smuggled north. These stash houses are typically in remote rural areas and become the targets of rival drug smuggling groups.
