HOUSTON, Texas — On Friday Texas’ Attorney General Greg Abbott and State Senator Wendy Davis–both gubernatorial candidates–debated in the state’s Rio Grande Valley. While much of the debate focused on immigration issues, amid the border crisis plaguing the state, the issue of life also arose.
Abbott made it clear that if elected governor, he will do everything in his power to protect life.
“I am pro life and Catholic, and like most Texans I believe that all life is sacred,” Abbott said. “And as governor, I will develop a culture of life in this state so we can do even more to protect both women and children.”
He continued, “Texas is ensuring that we protect more life and do a better job of protecting the healthcare of women by providing that women still have five months to make a very difficult decision. But after that time the state has an interest in protecting human life.”
Abbott’s views in this area are a stark contrast to those of Davis, who stood on the Senate floor for 11 hours last year to filibuster an anti-abortion bill.
At this point in the race, it is apparent that Abbott’s views align more closely with Texans than those of Davis; a recent Real Clear Politics poll shows that the Attorney General currently has 49.3 percent of the vote, while Davis only has 36.7 percent.
