TEXAS–Students in the Texas Tech University System will see a tuition increase of nearly 4 percent for the 2014-2015 academic year, according to the Associated Press.
More specifically, $183 will be added to tuition for 15 semester credit hours. This means that most full time students on a regular schedule will pay $366 more next year. Texas Tech’s full 2014-2015 tuition is estimated to be $9,600.
The new hike, which was approved on Tuesday, comes after a year of holding tuition flat. M. Duane Nellis, Texas Tech President, announced the increase is necessary to pay for new faculty and staff at the school.
Despite the tuition increase, Texas Tech still boasts a price tag that is far less expensive than many colleges throughout the U.S.
Governor Rick Perry has made affordable college education a top priority during his time in office, challenging Texas universities to offer students $10,000 degrees.
Perry said, “A $10,000 degree provides an opportunity for students to earn a low-cost, high-quality degree that will get them where they want to go in their careers and their lives.”
