Despite previous hints that he might opt to decide to caucus with Republicans and incoming Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell reaching out in an attempt to make that happen, Independent Sen. Angus King of Maine says he’ll be staying with the Democrats … for now.
He emphasized that “my independence has always been respected” in the Democratic caucus.
He argued that “it’s in Maine’s interest” to have a senator in each Senate caucus so that the state can be represented across the partisan divide.
As recently as last month, King floated the possibility of joining Republicans if they offered him a committee chairmanship.
King made the announcement despite admitting to being tempted to join with the Republicans now that they have the majority.
